Exchange Foreign Currencies Into Euro

When vacationing in Germany, tourists should exchange their foreign currencies into Euro to make their stay smoother and more enjoyable. While paying with credit or debit cards is widespread, smaller shops, restaurants, or rural attractions might only accept cash. Additionally, tourists who pay directly with Euro can avoid exchange rate fees and additional transaction costs that might arise when using foreign cards or withdrawing money from ATMs.

The Premium Money Back Guarantee is a free service provided by Reisebank, granting travelers a 30-day return guarantee for any leftover foreign currencies they may have brought back with them: If travelers exchange between 400 and 1,000 euros in travel money, they have the opportunity to exchange the leftover foreign currency (within 30 days after purchase) without a service charge and at the same exchange rate upon presentation of the original Premium Money Back sales receipt.

    More
  • Why is there a difference between the buying rate and the selling rate?

The difference between the buying and selling rates (spread) reflects costs associated with currency trading, including administrative costs, inventory holding, and providing qualified service to our customers. Additionally, market conditions and associated risks also influence the spread.

    More
  • Do I need proof or identification to sell currencies?

As a bank, we require proof of origin in addition to a valid identification document for transactions exceeding €2,500 (including fees). Since August 8, 2021, the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) requires a suitable proof of the money's origin to be presented, which convincingly demonstrates the origin of the submitted assets.

    More
  • Is there an upper limit for the sale of currencies?

No, there is no legal upper limit. However, depending on the exchange volume, identification documents and proof of origin may be required. For transactions exceeding €50,000, please contact one of our employees at one of our over 80 branches in Germany beforehand to ensure the process is as smooth as possible for you.

    More
  • Is it possible to transfer the payout amount directly to my bank account?

A transfer to your bank account is possible, but depending on the bank, fees may apply.

    More
  • Do the buying rates fluctuate significantly?

Since the rates depend on current market conditions and are updated multiple times a day, no definitive statement can be made about this. However, you can always ask one of our employees on-site if there have been significant fluctuations in certain rates.

    More
  • Can I view the buying rates online at the branch?

At the moment, this is not possible procedurally. However, you can inquire about rates by phone beforehand.

    More
  • Do you also buy exotic currencies?

As one of the leading providers in the field of currency exchange, we also buy some exotic currencies. Please inquire by phone or email in advance, or feel free to ask us directly in the branch which exotic currencies we buy.

    More
  • Is it possible to exchange one foreign currency for another?

Yes, this is possible. Please note that the respective counter buying and selling rates will be applied in this case. However, the exchange fee is only charged once. There is no direct exchange rate from one currency to another, as is common in the foreign exchange market.

    More
  • Can I also exchange older banknotes?

Depending on the country, you can also exchange older and sometimes even out-of-circulation banknotes at your Reisebank. For example, it is possible to exchange Swiss banknotes from series six and eight at your Reisebank. Since we cannot resell these notes and they must be returned to the respective central bank, we purchase these notes at a discount of 35% from the regular counter buying rate.

    More
  • Can I also exchange damaged notes with you?

This depends on the currency and the degree of damage. Please bring the defective note directly to a branch near you for assessment.
